The treaty was negotiated by more than 70 countries at the United Nations Minamata Convention on Mercury and went into effect for the first time today.
On July 7th 2017, after 3 weeks of deliberations involving 140 countries from around the world, 122 countries voted in favor of a historic treaty which would ban the possession of nuclear weapons under international law. Unfortunately though, every country which currently owns and possesses nuclear weaponry refused to vote on or accept the terms of the new agreement.

The announcement comes nearly 3 weeks after a separate United Nations investigation concluded that the Syrian government was also behind chemical attacks from 2014 into August 2016.
In an open letter, more than 70 aid groups have suspended cooperation with the UN in Syria and called for a complete and transparent investigation into relief efforts inside the war-torn country

A just published, 95 page, report from the United Nations has found that the Syrian government was behind “all the chemical attacks” in Syria – these are War Crimes. Assigning blame to the Syrian government is, ipso facto, blaming Russia. The attacks in question occurred in 2014, Russia signed an international agreement to remove all the chemical weapons from Syria in 2013.
Recent bombing in Aleppo have left over 2 million people without access to water or electricity and as hospitals continue to be military targets, only 35 doctors remain in city limits.
Since 2010 over 770,000 Haitians have become infected and over 10,000 have died as the result of a deadly Cholera outbreak. The disease, native to India, was inadvertently brought to the region by UN peacekeepers. In 2015 the UN was sued for their role in the tragedy, but was granted immunity by international courts. Now, for the first time, they have admitted their direct culpability and will work with the country for a resolution.
The United Nations names the situation in Yemen “the worst humanitarian crisis on Earth.” In 15 months, more than 9,000 people have died – 3,000 of which were innocent civilians – and 2.8 million more have been driven out of their homes.
